IOLS – Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

Cost: $15

What: IOLS and OWL Training

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is a fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you master basic camping skills required for Boy Scouts to advance in rank from Tenderfoot through First Class.

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders training is designed to help leaders learn how to provide a memorable camping experience for their Webelos Scouts and parents or guardians.

When: Friday, March 17, 2017 – 6:00 PM through Sunday, March 19, 2017, 10:00 AM. Sunday morning is optional and you are free to leave after the last session end around 10 p.m. Saturday evening.

Where: Catawba Meadows Park, 701 Sanford Drive, Morganton, NC

Why: Because IOLS, along with Youth Protection Training and Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Position Specific Training, is what it takes to be a “Trained” leader.   OWL is not mandatory for Webelos leaders, but is highly recommended.

And: Because there is very little difference between the two courses, Webelos leaders will receive certification in both. (You will receive the Webelos part.)

How much: $15.00, submit attached registration to council office no later than Wednesday, March 15 or pay at event registration.

Contact: Paul Vanover, 828-413-0896 or by e-mail, sm_troop899@yahoo.com

Logistics:  Uniform for the duration of the course will be class A.  Bring all appropriate camping gear to survive in the outdoors for the week-end including tent, extra warm clothes, comfortable shoes, pocket knife and mess kit.  There are bathroom facilities at this location and also clean drinking water.  There is very convenient parking too.  Staff will provide a hot meal Friday evening.  Remaining meals will also be provided with the exception of the Saturday evening meal.  Please, plan to cook a meal, dutch oven or otherwise, that can be shared. Teaming up with another participant would be preferred.   Participants are responsible for their own provisions and equipment for this cooking experience.  You will also need a compass and a one burner stove for Saturday, (you can buddy with another participant if necessary).

Tablerock District camporee will be going on at the same time and we will do a couple of activities with the youth including the Saturday evening meal.  It is a Highland Games themed camporee and details are on the council website in case your troop is interested in a fun event.
