Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS)

Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead scouts in the outdoors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Along with additional position-specific courses, this course is required of all direct contact leaders registered in Scouting America Troops in order to be considered “trained” under National Scouting America guidelines.
Medical Forms A & B are required for this event. They are due upon arrival. The forms are available for download below.
IOLS Packing List:
- Tent, Ground Cloth, and/or Tarp (No Hammocks).
- Sleeping bag w/sleeping pad or mattress.
- Sturdy Shoes – No Open-Toe Shoes.
- Change of clothes w/sleeping attire.
- Mess Kit (plate, cup, eating utensils).
- Soap, washcloth, and towel.
- Sunglasses.
- Camp Chair.
- Camera/Phone.
- Notebook, pen, and pencil.
- Coat/jacket, cap, and/or gloves.
A Scout's Ten Essentials
- First Aid Kit.
- Flashlight.
- Trail Food.
- Matches & Fire Starters
- Sun Protection (SPF 15 or greater)
- Whistle
- Rain Gear
- Water
- Map & Compass
- Pocket Knife
In a day pack, include your scout ten essentials plus a notebook, pen, pencil, and mess kit.
If using a c-pap, you will need to bring a 100ft+ electric cord.
